Abstract

This study examines the symbolic and astrological dimensions of the Derafsh Kavian in ancient Iranian mythological and ritual traditions, focusing on its connection to Zayja (horoscopes) and Fereydun’s astronomical role. The central hypothesis suggests that Fereydun used the Derafsh Kaviani not only as a symbol of victory and legitimacy but also as a celestial chart to predict the destinies of his reign and that of Zahhāk. The structural and visual parallels between the banner and Zayja indicate a deliberate symbolic design, positioning the Derafsh Kaviani as both a political emblem and a representation of cosmic order.

An interdisciplinary approach was applied, combining descriptive-analytical and comparative methods. Mythological, religious, and visual sources were collected and analyzed to uncover structural and symbolic correspondences.

Results show that the star-like and cruciform design of the Derafsh Kaviani closely aligns with the cross-shaped configuration of the horoscope. Features such as the central axis, radial symmetry, and twelvefold division, alongside textual evidence of Fereydun’s dual role as king and astrologer, suggest that the banner symbolically reflects the cosmic horoscope and manifests farr-e izadi (divine glory). Fereydun’s actions appear guided by celestial order, emphasizing his role in shaping these cosmological symbols.

This study offers a fresh perspective on the Derafsh Kaviani, revealing its dual function as a political insignia and cosmological instrument, and highlighting the interplay of power, ritual, and astronomy in ancient Iranian culture.
