Abstract
Purpose: The horse is among the most important animals that, due to its physical characteristics, domestication capability, and diverse roles, has accompanied humans since the dawn of civilization and has influenced various aspects of human life. This animal is recognized in many cultures with attributes such as loyalty, nobility, and friendship, and has been regarded as a symbol of moral values. The presence of the horse can be reflected in artworks, cave paintings, inscriptions, ritual objects, historical texts, as well as beliefs, ceremonies, myths, wars, religious rituals, celebrations, mourning, and even in romantic and epic narratives. Although other animals like dogs, cows, and sheep also appear in cultures, the horse's versatility, broad functionality, and the ability for human empathy have given it a more prominent status. The aim of this study is to identify the symbolic aspects and beliefs formed around the horse in general and the winged horse specifically within Iranian Islamic culture.
Method and Research: Using a descriptive-analytical approach and documentary studies, the authors seek to answer the question: "What position does the horse, especially the winged horse, hold in Iranian myths, religious beliefs, and culture, and how is this position represented in symbolism and cultural narratives?"
Findings and Conclusions:The results of this study show that the winged horse has held a symbolic and significant presence not only in Islamic texts with the narration of Buraq but also since ancient times in myths, popular beliefs, mystical traditions, and even in ancient religions.
