Abstract

‘Time’ is one of the most influential phenomena in the existence which along with place, is a container for performing works in the world. In old Iranians’ ideology, time itself had doctrine that predestination was considered one of its basic categories. The effect of time is clearly found in the religious and practical maxims of clergymen and sages in the cultural ideology in the Sassanid era. As the effect of time is not so bold in other genres as it is in the maxim genre of that era, this article studies the phenomenon of time in a descriptive method using library sources with an approach to the relation between time and work performance in Phlavi Guidbooks. The results show that the guidance counsellors in admonition to their addresses, have spoken about the importance and effect of time in work performance from the eternal to the final times and their medial periods like millennium, year, season, night and day sections, hour, … . In some cases, the factors and the results of performing or avoiding certain woks are also mentioned. Finally, it is to be stated that the traces of many Pahlavi maxims can be clearly traced in post-Islamic Iranian literature, politics, culture, and society.
