Purpose: Fairy tales are fictional narratives that unfold in a non-real world. The protagonists of these stories typically possess extraordinary magical abilities, which enable them to perform wondrous deeds that, from a conventional rational perspective, are deemed impossible. These narratives often culminate in a happy ending, achieved through the hero's triumph over adversities. Magical elements, as fundamental components of fairy tales, play a pivotal role in shaping their fantastical nature. Beyond generating narrative pleasure, these elements significantly stimulate the audience's imagination and deepen their understanding of fundamental existential concepts. This research aims to investigate and analyze the magical elements in Iranian fairy tales and to elucidate their multifaceted cognitive and cultural functions in interaction with the audience's mind and perception.
Method and Research: Employing a descriptive-analytical method and relying on library resources, the present study selected ten samples of Iranian fairy talesas its statistical population. Utilizing an analytical framework, their cognitive and cultural functions were examined.
Findings and Conclusions: The findings indicate that magical objects and tools are the most recurrent material elements, while incantations and spells are the most prevalent spiritual elements in these tales. Each of these elements, depending on the narrative context and the story's atmosphere, performs distinct functions and plays a significant role in advancing the plot and engaging the audience's mental participation. By elucidating the nature and significance of the functions of magical elements in Iranian fairy tales, this study analyzes their role in narrative construction and cultural representation.
